'Learn:Lead:Succeed is one of the best leadership resources I have seen in twenty-three years as a Principal. It blends recent theory with practical activities to produce a common sense, teacher friendly program for leadership development. It is highly relevant to all school settings. As the program says, "Leadership is everybody's business".'
John Livingston, Executive Principal, Kirwan State High School, QLD

Learn: Lead: Succeed
A resource to support the building of leadership in Australian schools (revised 2007)
(paperback, A4, wire bound, 114 pages)

Learn:Lead:Succeed, APAPDC's very successful professional development resource for school leaders, has been revised and updated.

The first part examines the issues around leadership succession, the L5 Frame for building leadership in schools, how leadership is formed, and school-based leadership development programs.

The second part is constructed around five propositions of the L5 Frame that form a framework for building leadership in schools. Theory and practice are combined in a range of individual and group processes and activities that can be easily facilitated, built on and adapted to suit various situations.

Learn:Lead:Succeed has been constructed around a frame for building leadership in schools that was developed in 2003, at the intiative of APAPDC, by a group that included some of Australia's leading researchers and practitioners in the fields of leadership and succession planning. They were Patrick Duignan, Louise Bywaters, Jenny Lewis, Kathy Lacey, Tom Croker, Don Zoellner, Susan Boucher and Jeremy Hurley.

The frame consists of five propositions:

  1. Leadership starts from within
  2. Leadership is about influencing others
  3. Leadership develops a rich learning environment
  4. Leadership builds professionalism and management capability
  5. Leadership inspires leadership actions and aspirations in others.

Learn:Lead:Succeed can be used by principals and leadership teams in their schools, as well as by individual aspirant leaders. It is primarily aimed at preparing aspiring educational leaders for positional leadership in schools, though it is as applicable for the development of teacher-leaders in schools. The resource will enable principals, in every school in Australia, to build leadership aspirations and skills. The resource, in its first edition, has been comprehensively trialled across the country. The revised edition includes much more on the L5 Frame, and brings the readings, activities and references up to date,

It is envisaged that primarily principals and leadership teams will use the resource package as a tool to facilitate leadership development within their own schools. By using the strategies, activities and processes within the package, the principal, along with aspiring and developing leaders, can work to tailor a suitable program based on the needs of the individuals involved. Individuals and groups may also use this resource to guide their own leadership journey where there is a need for a more self-managing approach. Its purpose is also to raise issues and provide broad strategies for employers and education systems in addressing the challenges of leadership succession and capacity building.

The activities and processes can be used by either groups or individuals as part of their professional development and learning program. Principals' associations and education policy makers can use this resource to identify current thinking and practice in leadership development and capacity building and may find it a useful tool and supportive resource in raising awareness. It could be used to support strategic directions, influence decision making and budget allocations for further professional development and to inform research directions.
