MindMatters State News New South Wales Highlights from Term 2 There have been 28 events held during this term with 365 participants attending.
L2 Planning Workshop in Dubbo, 7 - 8th June
Twenty two people participated in the L2 Planning Workshop held in Dubbo on the 7 and 8th June. Teams of people came from DEC (Department of Education and Communities) schools in the region. Some of these schools managed to have 6 people as part of their teams and one team who wanted to come but had difficulty finding relief staff until the last minute, had 4 people. Three people travelled 3 hours from Walgett to attend. The teams had diverse representation from Principal, Deputy Principals, Head Teachers, Chaplain, School Counsellors, Aboriginal Education Officer and classroom teachers. The new School Link Co-ordinator and a Health Promotion Officer from Greater Western NSW Area Health Service also attended. We had lots of fun doing the 30 second marketing spiel towards the end of day two. I am sure that participants will take some of their learnings back to their school communities and use it as part of the process of communicating their intentions for whole school interventions to support the mental health and wellbeing of their school communities.
Other events An enthusiastic group of 21 participants from 10 schools attended the Communities do Matter workshop at Rydges North Sydney in April. Some were attending for the first time and others for their 4th or 5th workshop in order to progress their whole school plans. This workshop saw people travel from Newcastle to attend - great commitment. (The record for travel so far this year is 7 hours from Tweed heads to Forster - will it be broken???). Wonderful teams attended the Students with High Support Needs workshops on the central coast. School teams spent two days working collaboratively on identification, supporting and selecting interventions for students needing extra mental health support. Some of these schools are following up by attending the Student Empowerment and Teaching and Learning workshops scheduled for the next few weeks. There was also an addition to the MindMatters family..... Samuel Pascoe was born on the 13th of May, so Jason and Victoria have been enjoying their new addition and navigating some sleepless nights. We are sure that this will add to the stories you will hear at Jason's workshops..... Like waking up 15 minutes before the taxi arrives to take Jason to the airport - because he slept through the alarm!!! Yes he can relate that to using a whole school approach to Mental Health and Wellbeing.... There have been several regional meetings and presentations during term two and we are looking forward to seeing some exciting developments across regions in the coming months.
MindMatters Recognition Process After the success of five New South Wales schools in 2010 being recognised as MindMatters schools we are hoping to see more recognised in 2011. If you are interested in finding out how this might be possible please contact Jason or Maryanne to discuss how this can occur or check out more information on the website www.mindmatters.edu.au/whole_school_approach/mindmatters_recognition_and_overview.html We look forward to working with you.
